What Is Center Stage?

Center Stage is Apple’s AI-powered camera framing feature designed to keep you in the center of the frame during video calls. It uses the device’s ultra-wide front-facing camera to pan and zoom automatically, ensuring you’re always visible—even if you shift around.

Which iPads and Macs Support Center Stage?

Not every Apple device supports this smart feature. Here’s the full list:

Supported iPads:

  • iPad Pro 11‑inch (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 12.9‑inch (5th generation and later)
  • iPad Air (5th generation)
  • iPad (9th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (6th generation)

Supported Macs:

  • Any Mac paired with a Studio Display
  • Any Mac paired with an iPhone 11 or newer (iOS 16+) via Continuity Camera
  • MacBook Pro and iMac (2024 or later)
  • MacBook Air (2025 or later)
Note Center Stage is not currently available on iPhones.

How to Enable and Use Center Stage on iPad

With iPadOS 15.5 and later, enabling Center Stage is seamless. It activates automatically during video calls and can be toggled on/off via Control Center.

Steps:

  1. Start a FaceTime or Zoom call.
  2. Swipe down from the top right corner to open Control Center.
  3. Tap the FaceTime controls tile.
  4. Tap the Center Stage button.

Alternatively, during a FaceTime call, tap your video thumbnail and select the Center Stage icon.

How to Use Center Stage on a Mac

There are three ways to use Center Stage on your Mac, and each method depends on the macOS version and the model of your MacBook or iMac.

1. If Your Mac Has a Built-In Center Stage Camera

  1. Open the FaceTime app on your Mac.
  2. Click the Camcorder (Video) icon in the top menu bar.
  3. Select the Center Stage option.

2. With Continuity Camera (iPhone as a webcam)

Thanks to the Continuity Camera feature, you can turn your iPhone into a webcam for your Mac and use the Center Stage feature on your Mac if you own an iPhone 11 running on iOS 16 or later and a Mac running on macOS Ventura or later.

  1. Mount your iPhone on your Mac using a MagSafe compatible stand, or place it on a tripod next to your Mac with the rear camera facing you.
  2. Open FaceTime on your Mac.
  3. In the top menu, select VideoYour iPhone.

  5. Choose between “Main” or “Ultra Wide” camera if needed.

    3. Using Studio Display

    The Studio Display includes a 12MP ultra-wide camera with Center Stage built-in.

    1. Connect your Mac to the Studio Display using the provided cable and adjust the display as needed.
    2. Now, open the FaceTime app on your Mac.
    3. Click the Camcorder (Video) icon in the top menu bar.
    4. Select the Center Stage option.

    While Center Stage is a handy tool during a video meeting, it isn’t something you would need all the time. Thus, it’s helpful to know how to turn off Center Stage to avoid awkward instances during a meeting. Here’s how you can:

    On iPad:

    1. Swipe down from the top right corner of your iPad’s screen to pull down the Control Center.
    2. Tap the FaceTime controls tile, then tap Center Stage in the additional options to turn it off.

    On Mac:

    1. Click the Camcorder (Video) icon in the top menu bar.
    2. Click the Center Stage button in the drop-down menu to turn it off.
