WhatsApp silently pushed an OTA update that let the sender know when his/her message had been read by the recipient. We saw a crazy workaround that did work in stopping WhatsApp from sending read-receipts most of the time. It was fun while it lasted but the workaround was a slightly cumbersome process.
Now, thanks to a Cydia tweak, you can successfully turn off read-receipts on your iPhone. Yes, this means you’ll need a jailbroken iPhone for the whole thing to work. A tweak called “WhatsApp Read Receipt Disabler” makes sure anyone sending you a WhatsApp message never gets to see the “blue icon” which tells the sender that you have read his/her message. Here’s more.
How to Disable WhatsApp Read Receipts on iPhone Running iOS 8.x or Earlier:
“WhatsApp Read Receipt Disabler” is a simple Cydia tweak that does one thing correctly: it prevents read receipts from being sent. That means, you get a message from someone and you read the message but the sender will never see the blue-ticks (sender will never know you have read the message).
Note: you will still see blue ticks on messages that you send (which means the other person has read your message). The sender won’t be getting those blue ticks.
Read receipts have been missing on WhatsApp for all these years and I don’t think anyone had been eager to get them. In fact, people were happy that the “last seen” timestamp could be disabled in WhatsApp.
Introducing Read Receipts in WhatsApp has resulted in a large outcry by annoyed users who’d rather not have the senders know that they’ve read their message. But WhatsApp being WhatsApp, it hasn’t released any official statement regarding this and nor has there been any subsequent update.
I do hope that the app comes out with an update where you can toggle the read-receipt feature. But until then, “WhatsApp Read Receipt Disabler” should be helpful.
We tested it out on iPhone 6+ running iOS 8.1. Worked flawlessly. There are no settings to configure. Just install.
WhatsApp Read Receipt Disabler is available on Cydia’s BigBoss repo for free. You can grab it right away.
