Google is testing a Flipkart checkout experience inside Gemini and AI Mode in India. Some users see a Buy button on selected Flipkart listings; tapping it opens a Flipkart-branded checkout without leaving the AI interface.
The pilot is limited to some users and a small set of products: smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories. People outside the test still see regular product listings. Amazon products can appear alongside Flipkart items, but only Flipkart listings currently get the direct Buy option.
Google surfaces products, Flipkart handles checkout
For people in the test, the change is the handoff: they can discover an item while asking Gemini or AI Mode for help, then start checkout from the product listing. The checkout remains Flipkart-branded, but the technology behind the flow is still unknown.
The test is narrower than Google’s Universal Cart plan, which is meant to collect products across Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail. Our Google I/O 2026 roundup explains that wider shopping push. The current Flipkart flow appears separate from Google’s previously demonstrated hosted checkout; it is not clear whether the test uses Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol.
There is also a direct business tie between the companies: Google invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024 and took a minority stake. Amazon listings remain visible in the test, but they do not get the same purchase button.
A wider rollout is not confirmed
A person familiar with the test expects Google to widen it later in October, ahead of India’s festive shopping season. Google has not confirmed that schedule or shared a list of eligible accounts and products. For now, the Buy button may not appear even when a Flipkart item shows up in Gemini or AI Mode.
