Google unveils two next-gen AI smart glasses coming in 2026, offering hands-free assistance and an optional in-lens display for real-time information.
Google is gearing up to take a formidable step into the AI-powered smart eyewear arena. The tech giant announced it has two new smart glasses models in development, both slated for release in 2026. This move positions Google as a direct contender with Meta and potentially Apple in the growing wearable AI market.
The first model is focused on providing AI help without a screen. It comes with built-in microphones, speakers, and a camera. You can talk to Google Gemini, take photos, and ask questions about what you’re seeing.
This is meant for hands-free use. Whether you’re walking through a new city and want to know about a landmark, or shopping and need help with product details, you can get help without needing to check your phone.
The second model has all the same AI features but adds an in-lens display. It can show:
This approach is similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and lines up with rumors about Apple’s upcoming wearable. The display gives users quick, direct feedback without needing a phone screen.
Both glasses run on Android XR, Google’s platform for wearables. All the processing happens on a connected smartphone, which helps keep the glasses lightweight and efficient.
This is the same strategy used by other smart wearables that rely on phone power for better performance and battery life.
Google is working with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to design these glasses. The goal is to make them stylish, light, and comfortable enough for daily use. Google wants to avoid the bulky design that made early smart glasses unpopular.
Google’s AI glasses are aimed squarely at the same space Meta and Apple are targeting. Meta already has AI-enabled Ray-Bans and Oakley glasses, including models with in-lens displays. Apple is rumored to launch its own AI glasses in 2026, powered by Apple Intelligence.
If all goes as expected, 2026 could be the year when Google, Meta, and Apple go head-to-head in the AI glasses space
