Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Might Launch as eSIM Only Worldwide

Apple’s first foldable iPhone could debut in 2026 as an eSIM only device with a book style design and advanced display and camera technology.

Apple is reportedly planning to release its first foldable iPhone without a physical SIM card slot. According to a fresh leak from China, the device is anticipated to support only eSIM when it makes its debut in 2026. This was initially reported by a Chinese insider known as Instant Digital on Weibo.

Foldable iPhone Could Abandon SIM Tray

The source suggests that the upcoming foldable iPhone will probably not include a traditional SIM card slot, relying on eSIM functionality globally. Apple had previously removed SIM trays from US models in 2022. Implementing this change worldwide could face challenges in areas where eSIMs are not widely adopted yet. China, where physical SIM cards remain popular, represents a prime example of potential resistance. India seems more prepared for this transition as major carriers such as Jio, Airtel, and Vi already support eSIM activation through apps and online services, making the switch straightforward for consumers.

Display Dimensions and Design Insights

The device is said to adopt a book-style folding design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. Expected specifications include a 5.5-inch external display and a 7.8-inch internal foldable screen. The leak implies that Apple may have minimized the center crease found in other foldable models, suggesting the screen may appear smooth when open. Descriptions hint that the device might feel like two iPhone Air units combined in thickness, pointing to a robust hinge and reinforced foldable technology.

The foldable iPhone is rumored to be powered by Apple’s forthcoming A20 Pro chip built using TSMC’s 2-nanometer process. This chip should provide boosts in performance and power efficiency over existing flagship iPhones. The device might also feature a silicon-carbon battery, a technology capable of storing more energy without adding bulk, helping maintain battery life despite a larger internal display.

Under Display Camera and Photographic Capabilities

The report hints at a 24 MP under-display camera for the front, which would sit beneath the screen and remove the need for a punch hole or notch. Under-display cameras can compromise image quality, but the expectation is for Apple to fine-tune its hardware and software to reduce any loss. Details on the rear camera setup are still unconfirmed.

Launch Timeline and Proposed Naming

According to Mint, the foldable iPhone might launch in late 2026, likely called iPhone 18 Fold. Apple has been testing foldable prototypes for years, but this leak brings more concrete details. As the company shifts toward an eSIM-only ecosystem for its devices, this move aligns with its broader strategy.

Apple has not confirmed these details, and the information comes from Instant Digital’s Weibo post, as relayed by Mint. More details may surface once the device reaches its final testing phase.
