Apple Updates Invites App With Home Screen Widgets
Apple’s Invites app now supports Home Screen widgets, letting you view and manage upcoming events at a glance without opening the app.

- Apple adds widget support to Invites app: You can now see a live countdown to upcoming events directly on your iPhone home screen.
- Adding the Invites widget is simple: Long-press the home screen, tap Add Widgets, and pick from small, medium, or large countdown views.
- Invites app creates custom event invitations: It lets you design invites with backgrounds, fonts, and weather info, but making events requires an active iCloud+ subscription.
- Widget update hints at Apple’s plans: The limited countdown feature suggests Apple still sees potential for the Invites app and may expand functionality later.
- Expectations remain cautious for now: While the widget boosts visibility, its current usefulness is narrow, so upcoming updates will determine long-term user adoption.
Just hours after announcing its upcoming “Awe Dropping” iPhone 17 launch event, Apple quietly pushed an update to the Apple Invites app. The refresh adds home screen widget support, giving users a live countdown to their next scheduled event without needing to open the app.
How to Add the Invites App’s Widget
After updating, users can long-press the home screen, hit the Edit button in the top right, and select “Add Widgets” from the menu. Searching for the Invites app reveals three widget sizes – small, medium, and large. Functionality doesn’t change between them, however. Each widget only displays the number of days left until the next event, with no additional data.
Tapping the widget takes you straight into the Invites app, where full event details are still stored.
What is the Invites app?
Apple introduced the Invites app back in February as a way to build and manage custom event invitations. Users can design invites with background images, different fonts, directions, and even weather information attached.
The catch is that while the app itself is free, creating an event requires an iCloud+ subscription. That paid tier starts at $0.99 per month, meaning the widget mainly benefits those already paying for Apple’s upgraded iCloud plan.
A small but telling update
On the surface, widget support may look like a minor addition, but it signals that Apple still sees potential in Invites despite its quiet rollout earlier this year. The limitation to a simple countdown, though, may leave some wondering if Apple intends to expand functionality later on.
