Netflix has recently announced its upcoming anime titles at AnimeJapan 2026. And literally, it’s a flood of sequels, adaptations, and originals, fighting for attention. But not all of them deserve it.
After going through announcements, teasers, and studio lineups, I started looking at this from a simple entertainment perspective—would I actually watch this after a long day? That question quickly narrowed things down. This isn’t a hype list, but more of a filter. Below are the anime I’d actually watch in 2026.
The Most Anticipated Anime (Mainstream Picks I’d Still Watch)
These are the “you can’t ignore them even if you try” anime. I’ll watch them, but with expectations in check.
1. Blue Box Season 2: Will Taiki finally confess to Chintasu?
- Release Date: October 2026
- Genre: Romance, Sports, Slice of Life
- Manga: Kouji Miura
- Production House: Electric Circus (for season 2)
I didn’t expect Blue Box to stick with me the way it did.
Season 1 looked like another “sports + romance” mashup. I went in casually and found myself binge-watching, enjoying the sincere emotions of the characters without unnecessary drama.
Season 2 continues Taiki and Chinatsu’s relationship as it gradually deepens. And yes, it is precisely what I am looking forward to. From what the trailer suggests, it will be visually stunning and introduce a new character to make the story more compelling.
This may not dominate charts, but it will quietly outlive louder anime. I remember its slow-burn moments more clearly than most “top 10” shows.
2. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2: My soul healer
- Release Date: January 16, 2026
- Genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Drama, Action, Adventure
- Manga: Kanehito Yamada
- Production House: Madhouse
If you have not watched Frieren, you’re literally sleeping on a masterpiece.
It’s one of those rare anime that makes you rethink how stories are told. No urgency, no constant conflict. I tried watching it like a normal anime: fast, distracted, half-engaged. It didn’t work. Once I focused my attention on it, things were different. Every episode seemed like an epilogue.
In the first season, we watched Frieren starting her journey along with new friends to reunite with her former party hero, Himmel. The awkward chemistry between them, with a constant question of whether Frieren will actually understand his love, stirred my heart. It hits harder if you’ve lost a loved one.
Season 2 continues her journey to the north, diving deeper into memory, mortality, and what it means to outlive everyone around you. Also, I am expecting more magic battles and weird, fun quests.
3. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run: Fans’ favorite
- Release Date: 1st stage: March 19, 2026 2nd stage: Expected Fall 2026
- Genre: Action, Adventure, Supernatural
- Manga: Hirohiko Araki
- Production House: David Production
This is the one everyone’s waiting for and for good reason.
Steel Ball Run is widely considered the most beloved and ambitious JoJo arc, and after struggling through earlier parts myself, I finally understand why people are obsessed.
I’ve dropped it twice. It’s inconsistent, chaotic and sometimes exhausting. But the new 7th season has a completely different setting. The timeline shifts to 1890’s America, where two ex-jockeys compete in a horse race.
The western racing theme, along with stronger character writing and a focus on storytelling, is indeed refreshing and might become one of the most memorable journeys of the year.
The unique anime I’d actually prioritize
This is where I stop following hype and start trusting instinct. Here are some anime that would be worth making time for.
4. Sparks of Tomorrow
- Release Date: July 5, 2026
- Genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Drama
- Light novel: Hiro Yuki
- Production House: Kyoto Animation
I’m betting early on this anime. Kyoto Animation + steampunk Kyoto + original story is already enough to get my attention. And from experience, these are the shows that age the best.
Set in an alternate version of early 20th-century Kyoto, Sparks of Tomorrow follows an unlikely duo who set out to recover a mysterious lost catalog, one that could finally bring electricity to their city, drowned in smoke and steam. This may sound rather boring, but there’s more than what meets the eye.
A pair made up of two totally different persons, opposites in personality, worldview, maybe even purpose, are forced into a shared journey through a world that feels stuck between past and future. And that tension? That’s where the story lives.
This won’t explode immediately. But give it time, it has “future classic” energy. Also, I suggest watching this anime on a big screen to enjoy the animations. Learn how to install and use Netflix on a Mac.
5. Dandelion
- Release Date: April 16, 2026
- Genre: Supernatural, Comedy, Drama
- Manga: Hideaki Sorachi
- Production House: NAZ
This is the wildcard, and I love that because the concept alone made me stop scrolling.
It is an adaptation of a one-shot manga by Hideaki Sorachi, the mind behind the widely popular anime Gintama. As per the trailer, the story follows two angels, Tetsuo and Misaki, whose job is to help lingering souls finally move on.
Not by force or rules, but by listening. What I found most hilarious is that they do it in their own offbeat way, not like perfect celestial beings, but like flawed, almost human guides.
I am sure this will divide people. Some will call it slow or weird, whereas others will connect deeply, and I’m betting on the second group. Also, if you love short anime rather than big series, check out my list of shows consisting mostly of 12-24 episodes.
6. The Ramparts of Ice
- Release Date: April 2, 2026
- Genre: Romantic Drama, Slice of Life
- manga: Kōcha Agasawa
- Production House: Studio Kai
I nearly passed on this one. It doesn’t scream for attention. There isn’t anything special about the premise or any hook, just a quiet high school story. But as I delved deeper into this anime, I could feel it’s the kind of show that doesn’t necessarily trend but resonates.
What makes it so special? The story is about an introverted girl figuring out her social life and keeping her emotional distance from everyone else. Until three of her fellow classmates begin to chip away at her defenses.
On paper, it sounds simple. But within the first few episodes, it hit me harder than expected and looking forward to what unfolds next.
Final Thoughts
After going through Netflix’s anime schedule for 2026, I realized that: I’m no longer chasing “what’s popular.” I’m chasing “what stays.”
If I had to narrow it down to three:
- Frieren Season 2 → for emotional depth
- Steel Ball Run → for scale and ambition
- Sparks of Tomorrow → for originality
Everything else? Optional.
The biggest anime of 2026 won’t necessarily be the best one. It’ll just be the most talked about. The best one will be the show you almost skipped, and then couldn’t stop thinking about days later.
So, which 2026 anime are on your binge list? Let me know in the comments below. I’ll surely check them out!
