Apple’s first foldable iPhone is starting to look real. New dummy models shared by leaker Sonny Dickson and a follow-up video by AhMad Ansari offer a clearer sense of how the device will sit next to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The comparison makes one thing obvious. The foldable iPhone is noticeably shorter than the Pro Max when folded. In hand, it would likely feel closer to an iPhone mini, though the added width changes that impression. It looks compact in height, but broader than any recent small iPhone Apple has shipped.

The thickness tells a more interesting story. When folded, the iPhone Fold appears nearly as thick as the iPhone 18 Pro Max. That suggests Apple is not chasing extreme thinness in its first attempt. Once opened, the device would effectively split that thickness in half, giving it a much slimmer profile in use.
This also puts Apple’s foldable strategy into context. Instead of trying to match the thinness of standard iPhones at all times, the design leans into the tradeoff. You get a thicker device in your pocket, and a thinner, larger display when it matters.
The Fold could land as iPhone Ultra
The foldable model is widely referred to as iPhone Fold, but there is growing expectation Apple could position it differently. The name iPhone Ultra has surfaced as a possibility, which would place it above the Pro line rather than alongside it.
If that holds, the device is not just another form factor. It becomes Apple’s top-tier experiment, both in design and pricing.
iPhone 18 Pro Max stays familiar with slight changes
Alongside the foldable, the iPhone 18 Pro Max dummy shows a design that looks largely consistent with Apple’s recent direction. Early expectations suggest it will be only slightly thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
That small change highlights the contrast between the two devices. The Pro Max continues Apple’s steady iteration, while the foldable introduces a completely different physical experience.
What this actually tells us about Apple’s approach
These dummy units are not final products, but they are often based on supply chain information. The proportions and dimensions tend to be close to what ships.
What stands out here is balance. Apple appears to be prioritizing usability over pushing extremes. The foldable is compact enough to carry comfortably, wide enough to feel substantial, and thick enough to support a reliable hinge and battery.
If this is accurate, Apple’s first foldable will not try to win on specs alone. It will aim to feel practical in everyday use, which is exactly where most foldables still struggle.
