Apple’s iPhone Duo introduces a new form factor to the iPhones, and many existing apps haven’t been optimized for its larger screen. Some older apps will appear with wide black bars on either side, leaving much of the 7.6-inch inner display unused. To help users find apps that properly support the foldable, Apple is introducing a “Made for iPhone Duo” badge on App Store listings as the phone launches on October 23.
The badge will appear on individual app pages, making it easier to identify apps designed to take advantage of the Duo’s larger display and folding design. Apple will also introduce dedicated App Store collections featuring optimized apps and games.
Only apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK count as optimized
Apple’s developer documentation also states how an app appears on the Duo depends partly on the iOS SDK used to build it. Apps built with iOS 26 or earlier remain in a smaller window, while those built with iOS 27 fill most of the inner screen but leave some space unused near the status bar.
Apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later can use the entire display, with toolbars and navigation controls arranged vertically along the right edge. Developers can get the new badge displayed on their App Store listings by submitting iPhone Duo screenshots through App Store Connect.
Several popular apps have already been updated to take advantage of the new design. Netflix lets users browse short clips on the outer screen and continue watching on the larger inner display. Prime Video can play a movie on the upper half of the partially folded screen while showing cast information and other details below.
Zoom can display meeting participants alongside shared content, while Lyft shows a larger route map next to available ride options. Microsoft is also preparing updated versions of Word and Outlook that place documents, formatting tools, and emails side by side, with those updates expected in the coming weeks. Here are some example Apple showcased on their site.
Apple says more apps will receive iPhone Duo optimizations throughout the year. With many developers still adapting their apps, the new badge should make it easier for users to find those that make proper use of the foldable screen.
