Apple is expected to debut a new magnetic Crossbody Strap with the iPhone 17, designed with a flexible metal core to pair with upcoming TechWoven cases. Here’s what leaks reveal before the September 9 event.
Apple may launch a new wearable accessory alongside the iPhone 17. According to reliable leaks, the company is preparing to launch a Crossbody Strap that attaches directly to its upcoming TechWoven cases. Here’s everything we know from the leaks.
Leaker Majin Bu first spotted the accessory in the fine print of cloned iPhone 17 case boxes. Now, fresh images and details reveal how it might work.
Traditional lanyards usually secure a device by looping through a thin string that bears the device’s weight. Apple’s version, however, appears to rely entirely on magnets.
Instead of a looped string, it seems to use two magnetic connectors built into the strap. Reports suggest a flexible metal core may run through the length of the strap, making it magnetic from end to end, while polarized rings at the tips lock together securely.
This design is meant to make attaching and removing the strap quicker and more intuitive. The real test, though, will be whether a magnetic connection alone proves secure enough in daily use.
The strap is expected to work with Apple’s new TechWoven cases, which include small lanyard holes in the bottom corners. These cases are set to replace last year’s short-lived FineWoven lineup, which Apple discontinued after only one year. The new TechWoven material is rumored to feel more premium while still steering clear of leather.
Crossbody straps are not new in the gadget world. Cameras often ship with straps out of the box, and even Apple once included a similar feature on the fifth-generation iPod touch.
More recently, the AirPods Pro 2 case came with a lanyard cutout. Maybe the new crossbody strap could also work with it. However, this is just speculation.
With phone theft on the rise and wearable accessories trending among younger users, Apple’s official solution feels like a natural next step. It also positions the iPhone more firmly in the dedicated camera space, especially after Apple added a Camera Control button last year.
Not everything about the Crossbody Strap is clear yet. The exact length of the strap is unknown, though “crossbody” suggests it will be longer than a simple wrist lanyard.
Some also question whether magnets alone are reliable enough to hold the weight of an iPhone, or the strap could end up doing the opposite of what it’s meant to, leading to more dropped iPhones.
Still, given Apple’s track record, the system is likely to be tested thoroughly before launch.
We won’t have to wait long for answers. Apple is set to reveal the iPhone 17 lineup at its “Awe Dropping” event on September 9 in California. Alongside new phones, we’ll likely see the TechWoven cases and the Crossbody Strap officially announced. Until then, the leaks raise an interesting question: is this Apple’s next practical accessory, or an over-engineered risk?
