Can’t Save WhatsApp Photos and Videos on iPhone? How to Fix It

By default, WhatsApp saves all incoming media to your iPhone’s camera roll. But that’s provided you have allowed WhatsApp to access the Photos app to save the images and videos to it. If for some reason, WhatsApp stops saving pictures and videos to the camera roll, there are two places you have to check to make sure it’s not disabled. Here’s what you need to do when you are facing this problem.

How to Fix Can’t Save WhatsApp Photos or Videos to iPhone Camera Roll

Enable Save Incoming Media

Step #1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.

Step #2. Tap Settings from the bottom right.

Step #3. Tap Chats → Enable the switch for Save to Camera Roll if it’s turned off.

Now, ask a friend to send a photo or video on WhatsApp to test if it gets saved to the camera roll or not. If it does, the problem’s solved. If not, head to the next step.

Check Photo Privacy Settings on iPhone

Sometimes, even when you have the ‘Save to Camera Roll’ enabled, WhatsApp cannot save pictures and clips to the camera roll. That’s often because you have prevented WhatsApp from accessing the Photos app.

This might have accidentally happened when you tapped ‘Don’t Allow’ in the popup that showed up asking for permission to let WhatsApp access Photos app. To fix this:

Step #1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Step #2. Scroll down and tap Privacy.

Tap on Settings then Privacy on iPhone

Step #3. Tap on Photos.

Step #4. Tap on WhatsApp.

Step #5. Select Read and Write.

Now, force quit WhatsApp or restart your iPhone and ask a friend to send you an image. It will save automatically in the iPhone’s Photos app.

That’s all done!

If both these methods fail, try deleting WhatsApp completely. You have the option of backing up from within WhatsApp’s Settings → Chats → Chat Backup. Then, re-install the app, and in the process, when iPhone asks if you should let WhatsApp access Photos app, tap ‘Allow.’

At last, it is essential to know that photos and videos that you manually download by taping the download icon will get saved in the iPhone Photos app. If you prefer to download pictures and videos over Wi-Fi and Cellular Data automatically, open WhatsApp → Settings → Data and Storage Usages → Photos under MEDIA AUTO-DOWNLOAD → select Wi-Fi and Cellular. Now go back and repeat this for Videos.
