Apple is reportedly redesigning the iPad mini with better water protection, a unique hole-free speaker system, and an OLED display, expected in 2026.
Apple has plans to introduce a more water-resistant iPad mini, akin to what users see in the iPhone range. Bloomberg reports that the upcoming iPad mini is set to sport a new protective casing that can handle splashes and moisture, making it ideal for environments like the kitchen, bathroom, or by the pool.
A significant design shift Apple is experimenting with is a novel speaker system that eliminates the need for holes. This vibration-based audio system delivers sound without open grilles, addressing potential water entry points. Unlike the iPhone, which uses adhesives and gaskets to seal speaker openings, this new approach could offer a different solution to water resistance.
In addition to enhanced water protection, the updated iPad mini is expected to feature an OLED display. This upgrade promises richer colors, deeper blacks, and an overall better contrast than the current LCD model. These enhancements are likely to come with a cost, as the starting price might increase by about $100, raising it from the current $499.
As for when this revamped iPad mini might hit the market, there’s no official date yet. However, it’s anticipated to make its debut in 2026, probably around October, about a month after the rumored launch of the iPhone 18.
