Leaked S11 chip suggests no big speed boost for 2025 Apple Watches. Expect efficiency and display upgrades, with major changes likely in 2026’s S12.
Apple’s next wave of watches is expected to debut in September alongside the iPhone 17 lineup. But anyone banking on a major speed bump after two relatively quiet years may be disappointed.
An internal Apple leak has revealed that the upcoming S11 chip in the Apple Watch Series 11 shares the same T8310 processor architecture as the S9 and S10 used in the past two generations. In practice, that means everyday performance should be nearly identical to last year’s models.
The S-series chip in the Apple Watch is a “system in a package” (SiP), a compact module that combines the CPU, memory, and wireless components. Apple often refreshes this package without changing the underlying CPU, which is what appears to be happening here.
The S11 retains the same T8310 SoC with two “Sawtooth” CPU cores found in the S9 and S10. The current setup includes a 64-bit dual-core CPU, a four-core Neural Engine, second-generation Ultra Wideband, and 64GB of storage. With the CPU unchanged, any improvements will likely come from refinements in efficiency, packaging, or wireless performance rather than faster app launches.
Incremental chip updates can still matter. A slimmer design could free up internal space for a larger battery or improved cooling, and Apple might reallocate that space toward tougher case materials or upgraded sensors. Other likely areas for improvement include more stable wireless connections across UWB, Bluetooth, and LTE/RedCap, along with modest gains in display brightness or clarity, particularly for the Ultra model.
These expectations are based on Apple’s recent update patterns rather than confirmed specs. A true leap in performance is now anticipated for the S12 in 2026, when a fresh microarchitecture is more likely.
Models and Internal References
Apple is reportedly targeting Tuesday, September 9, for its fall keynote. Series 11 and Ultra 3 are expected to headline, with a possible Apple Watch SE 3 joining the lineup.
If the S11 leak holds true, the breakdown could look like this:
Barring surprises, the 2025 Apple Watch lineup will deliver familiar speed, with the real gains in battery life, connectivity, and subtle hardware tweaks. Those holding out for a performance overhaul may need to wait for 2026’s S12 generation. Would that be enough to make you upgrade, or will you sit this one out?
