Apple's First OLED MacBook May Be Called 'MacBook Ultra'

Apple may introduce an entirely new high-end laptop, the MacBook Ultra, later this year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The device is rumored to feature an OLED display, touchscreen support, and a noticeably higher price point than existing MacBook models.

A New Tier Above the MacBook Pro

For months, reports suggested that Apple would bring OLED displays and touchscreen functionality to the next generation of MacBook Pro models powered by the upcoming M6 chip.

However, Gurman now suggests Apple could take a different approach. Instead of replacing the current MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max models, the company may introduce a completely new flagship tier called the MacBook Ultra that sits above the MacBook Pro lineup.

This strategy would allow Apple to keep the MacBook Pro as a high-performance option while positioning the MacBook Ultra as the absolute top-end Mac laptop.

    OLED Display and Touchscreen Support

One of the most significant rumored upgrades is an OLED display, which would mark the first time Apple uses OLED technology in a MacBook.

Apple has previously transitioned other products to OLED, including the iPhone X in 2017 and the iPad Pro in 2024. OLED panels provide deeper blacks, higher contrast ratios, and improved color accuracy compared with the current mini-LED displays used in MacBook Pro models.

The rumored MacBook Ultra may also include touchscreen functionality, something Apple has historically resisted on Mac laptops.

    Higher Price Expected

If Apple follows its previous pattern, the shift to OLED could lead to a significant price increase.

When OLED debuted on the iPhone X and later on the iPad Pro, Apple increased pricing by roughly 20 percent. A similar bump could push the MacBook Ultra into a much higher price bracket than current MacBook Pro models.

Part of Apple’s Expanding Product Strategy

The MacBook Ultra would align with Apple’s broader strategy of expanding its product lineup across more price tiers.

At the lower end, Apple recently introduced the MacBook Neo, starting at $599, to compete with affordable Windows laptops and Chromebooks.

At the premium end, Apple is reportedly preparing several ultra-high-end devices, including:

    • A foldable iPhone Ultra priced around $2,000
    • New AirPods Ultra with computer vision cameras are designed to provide enhanced Visual Intelligence features

The MacBook Ultra could become the flagship Mac laptop within this growing Ultra tier of Apple products.

    Possible Launch Timeline

Gurman expects the device to arrive toward the end of 2026, roughly the same timeframe as when Apple typically refreshes its MacBook Pro lineup.

Apple may still keep the MacBook Pro name for the device, but using the MacBook Ultra branding would clearly position it at the very top of the Mac lineup.
