Apple is said to be launching a new low-cost MacBook powered by the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro. The laptop could feature a 12.9-inch display, aluminum body, new color options, and a starting price around $699.

Apple is preparing a new entry-level MacBook designed for people who want a macOS laptop at a lower price than the current MacBook Air.

Journalist Mark Gurman reports that Apple plans to announce the device at an event in March 2026, with availability expected shortly after.

It May Use the A18 Pro Chip From the iPhone 16 Pro

Instead of using an M-series chip built specifically for Macs, this model is said to run on the A18 Pro, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

Using an iPhone-class chip would help Apple reduce costs. At the same time, the A18 Pro is powerful enough for everyday computing tasks such as web browsing, document editing, media consumption, and light creative work. Recent iPhone chips have closed much of the performance gap with Apple’s early M1 Macs, which suggests this machine would still feel fast for most mainstream users.

The Display Is Expected to Be Just Under 13 Inches With an Aluminum Body

The report describes a display slightly smaller than 13 inches. Earlier information has pointed to a 12.9-inch panel.

Apple is also expected to use aluminum instead of plastic. To make that possible at a lower price, the company has reportedly developed a faster and more cost-effective manufacturing process for the aluminum shell than the one currently used for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. This would allow Apple to maintain a premium feel without significantly raising production costs.

Apple Is Testing Brighter Color Options

Apple is said to be experimenting with more playful color choices than it typically offers on its Mac lineup.

Tested finishes reportedly include light yellow, light green, blue, pink, along with classic silver and dark gray. The final color options have not yet been confirmed.

The Starting Price Could Be Around $699

If the reported pricing is accurate, this MacBook would sit well below the $999 starting price of the MacBook Air. That would make it Apple’s most affordable new laptop in years and could expand the company’s reach among students and budget-conscious buyers.

Apple has not officially announced the product. Details such as final colors, exact display size, and confirmed pricing could still change before any March event.
