Apple’s Foldable iPhone May Look More Like an iPad Than a Phone

A new mockup based on leaked CAD files suggests Apple’s first foldable iPhone could prioritize a wide, iPad-style display when unfolded. If accurate, this approach may reshape how foldable phones are designed and used.

Apple is reportedly lining up a foldable iPhone for release next year, and a new mockup offers a hint of what could set it apart in a crowded market. While foldable phones aren’t new, this model suggests Apple is taking a distinctive approach, diverging from the competition.

A user named Subsy crafted the model, shared online, using leaked CAD files allegedly connected to Apple’s production plans. Though not exact, details like the hinge aren’t Apple’s, this mockup allows a peek into the possible future. It’s a glimpse at where Apple’s design priorities might be aimed.

Apple Seems Focused on the Unfolded Experience

The design of this foldable device echoes an iPad mini more than a typical smartphone when opened. This alone differentiates it. Instead of making a phone taller, Apple appears to be focusing on a broader display that remains practical when unfolded.

This design choice has an inherent trade-off. Once closed, the device becomes more box-like compared to Apple’s existing handsets. Most other foldables aim for a tall, slender profile when shut, aligning with users’ habitual grip. Yet, Apple seems ready to break with that norm for the sake of a larger internal screen.

A broader aspect ratio implies that the unfolded display isn’t just about size. Apple might be aiming for functionality, something conducive to reading or multitasking, rather than merely a bigger phone screen.

Software May Hint at What’s Coming Next

Even if Apple holds back any formal announcement about a foldable iPhone, their software updates could offer clues. During their developer conference in June, Apple might introduce new ways for apps to adapt to these unconventional screen sizes, quietly laying the groundwork for developers.

Apple has deployed similar strategies before, prepping developers well before unveiling major hardware innovations. If repeated, these updates could suggest that a foldable iPhone is nearing reality.

While nothing is set in stone, this model aligns with a familiar Apple strategy. Entering late, ignoring trends, and creating something they believe improves on existing norms. If accurate, Apple’s foldable iPhone could redefine the category, not solely because of its folding ability, but through its reimagined concept of a foldable device.
