Abode has launched a $34.99 Garage Tilt Sensor and a $49.99 Outdoor Contact Sensor for monitoring garages, gates, sheds, and other entry points around a home.
Both can show their open or closed status in Apple Home and work with Alexa and Google Assistant. They also support Abode’s CUE automations, so an open gate could switch on driveway lights or a garage left open could trigger an alert.
There is one important catch: both sensors require an Abode security system. Apple Home support runs through the Abode hub, so these are mainly for people who already use or plan to buy into Abode’s setup.
One sensor reads a door’s angle
The Garage Tilt Sensor detects when a surface changes position by roughly 45 degrees. That makes it suitable for overhead garage doors, attic hatches, basement hopper windows, and other hinged panels where a regular two-piece contact sensor may not fit well.
It uses a replaceable CR123 lithium battery and sends low-battery alerts to your phone. Abode advertises a wireless range of more than 100 feet, which should help with detached garages and outbuildings.
The outdoor sensor is built for gates and sheds
The Outdoor Contact Sensor uses a stronger magnet and allows a wider gap between its two parts. Abode says it can be mounted on wood or metal surfaces, including gates, sheds, storage units, mailboxes, and detached garages.
Its IP66 rating means it is dust-tight and designed to withstand strong water jets. It runs on two AA batteries and is rated for temperatures from -13°F to 140°F.
For Apple users, the appeal is having these entry alerts appear alongside existing HomeKit smart home devices and HomeKit Secure Video cameras. That adds coverage beyond the doors and windows most indoor sensors monitor.
Both new Abode sensors are available now from the company’s online store.
