Instagram getting a paid subscription was inevitable, but this feels different

Instagram may soon go premium with a new “Instagram Plus” tier, hinting at exclusive features behind a paywall.

    Instagram Testing Paid Subscription Tier

Paid subscriptions have already become standard across social platforms. Snapchat offers Snapchat Plus, Meta runs Meta Verified, and X has X Premium. Instagram moving in this direction was expected, but the way it’s being tested is what stands out.

Instagram is currently testing a new subscription tier, Instagram Plus, in select markets. Based on what has surfaced so far, this isn’t built around profile perks or visibility boosts. Instead, the focus is on Stories and the level of control users have over them.

Stories might stop being just 24-hour updates

The features being tested directly affect how Stories behave. Instagram Plus reportedly includes expanded audience controls beyond Close Friends, insights such as rewatch counts, the ability to extend Story visibility beyond 24 hours, and tools like searching within the viewer list.

If these features move beyond testing, they would shift Stories from something temporary and lightweight into something that can be tracked and managed more deliberately. The addition of analytics and extended visibility changes how content can be used over time.

This isn’t about features, it’s about control

Across the feature set, the pattern is consistent. Each addition is tied to control, either over who sees content, how long it stays visible, or how its performance can be understood. The ability to preview a Story without appearing in the viewer list further reinforces this direction, as it subtly changes the interaction without altering the core interface.

This approach differs from most paid tiers, which often emphasize status or reach. Here, the value comes from functionality and flexibility.

    The direction clearly favors creators

Even without an official positioning, the use case is evident. Features like extended Story duration, deeper engagement insights, and audience segmentation align more closely with creators and businesses than casual users. These tools directly impact reach, engagement, and content performance.

That does not exclude regular users, but the primary value appears to be geared toward those who rely on Stories more strategically.

Meta is testing a different monetization layer

What stands out is how Meta is approaching monetization within Instagram. Instead of charging for identity or visibility, this test focuses on enhanced usage and control. It points toward a model where core features remain accessible, but advanced functionality sits behind a subscription layer.

Since this is still being tested, it is not clear how many of these features would be included in a final rollout or how they would be packaged.

Pricing reflects early testing, not final strategy

Instagram Plus is currently being tested in select markets with relatively low monthly pricing. In the Philippines, it’s available for 65 PHP per month, which is roughly $1.07. In Mexico, it’s priced at 39 MXN, or about $2.15 per month. This level of pricing typically indicates early experimentation rather than a finalized global plan.

If the feature expands, pricing and feature availability are likely to evolve.

This feels like the start of something bigger

At this stage, Instagram Plus remains a limited test. It provides an early look at how Instagram might evolve its subscription strategy, with a clear focus on turning existing features into more advanced, layered experiences.

If expanded globally, it could reshape how Stories are used, shifting them from casual updates to more controlled and measurable content.
