WhatsApp has announced the rollout of a new feature called Group Message History, designed to help new members quickly catch up on conversations after joining a group chat. Meta says the feature has been one of the platform’s most requested additions.

The update addresses a common problem: new members joining active groups without enough context to follow ongoing conversations. With Group Message History, users adding someone to a group will now see an option to share recent messages with the new member.

According to WhatsApp’s blog post, groups can choose to send between 25 and 100 recent messages, allowing newcomers to view relevant conversation history without needing to scroll through everything. The shared messages appear separately from regular chat messages and include timestamps and sender information for clarity.

WhatsApp notes that message history is not shared automatically. Instead, it must be manually selected when adding a new participant. The platform will also notify everyone in the group when message history has been shared to maintain transparency.

    Admin Controls Included

Admins also have additional control, with the option to disable Group Message History entirely for groups that involve sensitive discussions.

    More Group Chat Updates

The feature follows last month’s rollout of several other group chat updates, including member tags, text stickers, and event reminders, as WhatsApp continues expanding tools focused on improving group communication.
