Apple introduces Edge Light in macOS Tahoe 26.2, a display-powered ring light effect that boosts video call clarity with real-time facial detection, smart brightness tuning, and broad compatibility across video apps and Apple Silicon Macs.
Apple has unwrapped a new video conferencing feature for Apple Silicon Macs with the second beta of macOS Tahoe 26.2. Called Edge Light, it casts a virtual ring of lights around your display to give your face a soft, natural glow during video calls, even in dim rooms.
Edge Light is Apple’s latest video effect that mimics a real ring light. Your Mac’s display becomes the light source, so you don’t need extra gear to look brighter and clearer on camera.
It uses the Mac’s Neural Engine to detect your face, understand its position, and adjust the lighting so it looks balanced and natural. The Image Signal Processor also tweaks brightness in real time to match your environment.
Apple added a smart touch where the lights fade away when your mouse gets close to the screen edge, so the feature never gets in your way.
You can enable Edge Light from the video effects panel, alongside tools like Portrait Mode, Studio Light, Reactions, and Backgrounds. It works with major video apps such as FaceTime, Zoom, and Webex.
Edge Light works on all Apple Silicon Macs and also on the Studio Display when connected to a supported Mac.
Most users need to turn it on manually during calls, but 2024 and newer Macs can enable it automatically in low light.
It even supports external cameras, making it useful for both professionals and everyday users.
Developers can download the macOS 26.2 beta now, and the public beta is expected later this week. The stable release should roll out between December 9 and December 16.
