Apple is expected to boost the iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, and new Air models with 12GB of RAM—a 50% upgrade over the iPhone 16. Here’s what it means for performance.
We’re just two months away from the launch of the iPhone 17 lineup, and leaks are already ramping up. According to a credible supply chain report, Apple is planning a major performance boost this year by upgrading the memory in select iPhone 17 models.
While all iPhone 16 models came equipped with 8GB of RAM, Apple is reportedly stepping things up with up to 12GB of RAM in the upcoming iPhone 17 series.
As per a July 2025 report from trusted industry sources in Asia, Apple will increase the RAM on every iPhone 17 model except the base variant.
This means the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the all-new iPhone 17 Air (replacing the Plus model) are expected to feature 12GB of RAM, a 50% jump compared to their predecessors. This hardware bump will significantly improve performance for multitasking, gaming, and advanced Apple Intelligence features powered by iOS 26.
The base iPhone 17 will continue with 8GB of RAM, identical to the iPhone 16. Apple usually avoids disclosing RAM details upfront, but teardown reports post-launch typically reveal these specifications.
Model | iPhone 16 RAM | iPhone 17 RAM | Upgrade |
---|---|---|---|
Base iPhone | 8 GB | 8 GB | — |
Plus / Air | 8 GB | 12 GB | +4 GB |
Pro | 8 GB | 12 GB | +4 GB |
Pro Max | 8 GB | 12 GB | +4 GB |
With Apple discontinuing the Plus model, previously just a larger version of the base iPhone, the enhanced RAM in higher-tier models signals Apple’s intent to further differentiate the standard iPhone from its premium siblings. This change could play a key role in defining user experience and positioning for Apple’s AI-powered features.
While casual users might not immediately notice the RAM increase, power users and professionals can expect better multitasking, smoother app performance, and longer-lasting usability.
As always, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, alongside the official rollout of iOS 26. Unless Apple surprises us by publicly revealing RAM details during the event, we’ll likely have to wait for teardowns to confirm the final specs.
But one thing is clear: this RAM upgrade could be a deciding factor for those weighing whether to upgrade from their current device.
