From manufacturing cheaper iPhone models to the latest Apple devices, Wistron has taken a giant leap in India – the second largest iPhone market for Apple. The information technology ministry has approved Wistron’s Rs 5000-crore plan to make high-end Apple devices.
This new plan will prove a dose of encouragement for the government’s Make in India initiative. Ravi Shankar, IT minister, said “We have just approved Wistron’s Rs 5,091-crore application, and it is with the Cabinet now… Wistron will make the latest iPhone models”.

Notably, Foxconn, which is another contract manufacturer for Apple has also applied to a Rs 2500-crore project in December.
Although China is an arch-rival of India in electronics manufacturing, the latter is not worried about incentives are given by the dragon land. The minister added that India has undoubtedly an edge over its rivals as “Openness of India’s democratic polity, where creativity is recognized and respected, adds its own incentive.”
According to Prasad, India is a land of opportunities and advantages as the country boasts a growing workforce, which is fluent in English, skilled workers in adequate number, and India is an emerging smartphone market.
The minister also added that India’s government has recently announced software products policy, which attracts international companies to establish themselves in India.
To create a conduce business environment, India’s government will provide full support to software product makers; the support will also include protection of intellectual property rights (IPR).
India wants to create companies like Google and Facebook, and for this purpose, the government has drafted a conducive policy.
In an interview, Prasad said the government would do “everything that is needed” to make India a strong IPR hub.
Apple has some big plans for India as the country is the second biggest smartphone market after China. With bitter trade relations with China, the United States is now looking for a fresh business partner, and India can offer excellent opportunities and advantages to iPhone maker.
