The iOS 13 is here, and like a true Apple-ites, you have upgraded to a newer, better, and smarter OS. However, your exhilaration immediately comes to a pause, as your WiFi not working on iOS 13 running device. As I always say, don’t worry, we have a solution.
Actually, I have a wholesome troubleshooting guide to help you. Basically, as and when you update your operating systems, settings are tweaked to accommodate the new features. While mostly these tweaks are for our benefit and ease, at times, they can create some issues. Whether your Wi-Fi is disabled or it drops, or the internet connection is not working, such issues might be due to some internal disturbances in the settings.
Systems error or bugs are common while updating your iOS, especially when there were some errors in installing the update. Here are some generic hacks that should rectify any flaw that might be preventing you from running the WiFi connection:
Tips to Fix iOS 13 WiFi Issue on iPhone or iPad
#1. Reset the Wi-Fi Router
The most basic and effective hack, so make sure you get it out of the way before wrestling with any other settings. Just like your computer, Wi-Fi router has memory, CPU, and local storage running over an operating system. And similar to your computer, restarting the device could free up the caches and reset any error.
Turn off the WiFi router and unplug the power source for a minimum of 5 minutes. Then reconnect power source and restart the router. This will allow the capacitor to fully drain, clearing all cache and ensuring a proper reset.
#2. Reboot the device
A common issue after a new update implementation is that many apps or features suddenly stops working. Most of the times, all you need is to reset some internal settings to resolve the issue. Force restarting your iPhone or iPad will do the needful as it clears out junk files and any corrupt temporary data.
If you are using iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, follow this detailed guide to force restart. As for iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons simultaneously, until you see the Apple logo. For iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch, press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons, until you see the Apple logo.
#3. Turn on Airplane Mode
The Airplane Mode suspends the radio-frequency signal transmission by the device, disabling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular networks. When disabled, it not just restarts but refreshes the basic settings of these services. And a reset might be all you need to fix Wi-Fi issue on iPhone running iOS 13.
To activate Airplane mode, open the Control Center and simply switch ON the mode. Soft reset your iPhone to ensure that the internal memory is refreshed. Once the device is active, switch OFF the Airplane Mode via the Control Centre.
Whether you force restart your device or use Airplane mode to reset the settings, it should mostly solve the problem. If not, here are some specific settings related hack that should help you to resolve the issue.
#4. Auto-Join Settings
Under normal circumstances, the iPhone automatically connects to the stored networks, as and when it is in range. However, an update can affect the settings, pushing you to connect to the network manually. To manage the Auto-Join settings, open the Settings → Wi-Fi.
Tap on the information (i) icon next to the Wi-Fi connection name; switch on the Auto-Join toggle. If the Auto-Join toggle is already on then try resetting network settings.
#5. Forget and Reconnect to the Wi-Fi Network
During updating your iOS, individual settings ought to change. At times, the parameters related to a specific network could be corrupted, causing connection error. This step enables you to reinstall the settings of the network, removing all mistakes.
To forget the Wi-Fi network, go to Settings → Wi-Fi. Here tap on the information (i) icon next to the Wi-Fi connection name. Tap on Forget This Network; a popup will ask for confirmation, tap on Forget to confirm. Now, restart your device to clear the network caches.
Reopen the Settings → Wi-Fi, find your network in the Other Networks section. Enter Password and Join the network again. If things still don’t look right, then jump on and reset your network settings.
#6. Reset Network Settings
It might be the case that the recently installed settings are creating some conflicts. A network setting reset basically erases all caches and clears DHCP settings and other networking related info. It will reset the new network settings and restores the original network options and values.
To perform this action Settings → General → Reset → Reset Network Settings. Once done, your iPhone should restart on its own with original network configurations. You will have to reconnect to your Wi-Fi network again.
#7. Reset all settings
Since nothing seems to be working, its time to bring out the bigger guns. Though not the immediate settings, updating to iOS 13 might have affected some underlying settings that are stoping your Wi-fi from working. This step shall eradicate any post-update symptoms leading to the issue.
To reset, go to Settings → General → Reset → Reset all settings. Enter the device code, if prompted and confirm the action.
The device is configured to default settings, and all your customized settings are deleted. Notably, this reset does not cause any permanent data loss, as the internal data in the phone memory is not touched.
#8. Disable VPN
If you have enabled a Virtual Private Network(VPN) either via the settings app or a VPN app, this could be your culprit. Disable the VPN setting from the Settings app. For more information on VPN, check out this post.
You might not be able to disable it due to the VPN app you might be using. So, launch the app and disable the VPN temporarily. Once your Wi-Fi problem is solved, you can activate the VPN as per your convenience.
#9. Disable Wi-Fi Networking Services
While this may sound odd, but the trick does seem to work for many iPhone users. As you may know, a Wi-Fi network also uses your location services. Disabling it might aid in solving your Wi-Fi-related issue.
Go to Settings → Privacy → Location Services scroll down to System Services. Scroll down to Wi-Fi Networking and switch off the toggle.
Once the problem is resolved, and Wi-Fi starts functioning correctly, you can turn on this feature. To do so, follow the same steps mentioned above and then toggle on the switch for Wi-Fi networking.
#10. Set Custom DNS
At times a quick fix to solve your iPhone’s Wi-Fi Problems is to switch to Google DNS or OpenDNS. Usually, the iPhone automatically assigns the DNS based on router configuration; however, you might have to manually change it in instances such as these. If nothing has worked out it till yet, then there might be some bug. Apple developers are often quick to resolve such issues; so relax and downgrade to iOS 12. Wait for a few days and switch back to iOS13, with a hopefull fully functional Wi-Fi network.
