Touch LCD iPhone App: An Interesting, Feature-rich Alarm Clock Worth Trying

A speaking alarm clock for $1.99 doesn’t really convey the features of TouchLCD, the iPhone app we’re set to review. We got to test drive TouchLCD, a retro-style LCD clock that doubles up as an alarm clock by your bedside (an alarm clock that speaks, basically).

Remember the Kickstarter project Snooze iPhone Alarm Clock dock? TouchLCD integrates with Snooze seamlessly to provide a richer experience than just the well-designed but normal bedside alarm clock.

Editor’s Note: TouchLCD and Snooze team up to provide a 15% discount on the $40 Snooze Alarm Clock Dock. You have to use the coupon code TLCD15 with the Snooze Dock.

TouchLCD runs independently too and it’s one of the most powerful clock apps I’ve seen. Almost everything about the app is great: starting from the interface and the touch-experience to the intricate features that let you configure almost everything on the app. After playing around with it for over a day, I can say that it’s really worth the money.

There are these little things that make TouchLCD stand out from the crowd. The interface is pretty streamlined, straightforward and lacks any distractive elements or embellishments. All information is available right on the first instance of the app but swiping the three panes (top, middle and bottom) reveals much more information and features. Accessibility is a huge plus: you can access the most important parts of the app easily.

When it comes to customization, there are plenty of options. From the time notifications to the display, from screen savers to the voice, almost every aspect can be configured.

Setting up the alarm or setting up time zones is easy. So is configuring the app. I must admit that the features where a little overwhelming at first. And it’s a good thing too.

One of the cooler features is that you can play music via the app and set it to sleep after a predefined time limit.

Light Pillar, the developer, says that there’s a new version waiting for approval. There are tons of additional features with the update:

  • Two more voice options (Male/Female Robot)
  • Tons of alarm tone packs. This is where it gets interesting. Right now, TouchLCD is kind of limited with its set of alarm tones. The update will let you purchase three-alarm packs (Loud, Ambiance, Fun) for $0.99 each. However, you can get the Fun Alarm Tone Pack for free by sharing a link for the app on Facebook. (you get to do this from within the app).

You can find TouchLCD on the App Store.
