In the wake of record decline of iPhone sales in the previous quarter, Apple is desperate to tap into the Indian smartphone market, where iPhone sales increased by a huge 56% in the last quarter.
With a view to understanding the fastest growing smartphone market as well as the price-conscious consumers, Tim Cook visited India last month. He announced to set up iOS app design and development centre in Bengaluru and map development centre in Hyderabad.
Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan to Be Apple’s Indian Brand Ambassador [Rumor]
In what could be yet another major announcement, Apple is to make Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan its Indian brand ambassador. During his weeklong visit to the country last month, King Khan had invited Cook at his seaside mansion in Mumbai for a dinner where who’s who of Bollywood including Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan were present.
The official announcement will be made when Apple will launch iPhone 7 in India later this year. Knowing the immense popularity of SRK not just in India but also across the world, iPhone sales will be hugely boosted in the third largest smartphone market.
Besides, Apple is in talks with the Modi Government to open retail store in the country and has requested the government to exempt the company from the rule of 30% local sourcing required for foreign companies.
Though Indian government has asserted that it won’t change the rule to suit any particular firm, the tech giant is trying to find an amicable solution.
“We are not in favour of any company selling used phones in the company, however, certified they may be.” commerce and industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman said at a press conference.
