iPhone 8 Features Expectation: Rumors Round-up
If rumors are anything to go by, iPhone 8 is all set to embrace a radical design. Having disappointed millions of fans by not introducing a brand new design with iPhone 7, Apple wants to celebrate the 10th anniversary of iPhone with plenty of firecrackers.
Glass Back with Stainless Steel Frame
Various reports have suggested that iPhone 8 would feature glass design with stainless steel frame (very much like iPhone 4). The flat sides with curved edges will add more charm to the profile of the iPhone 2017.
“Apple has tentatively decided that all the 5.5-inch, 5-inch, and 4.7-inch models will have glass backs, departing from metal casings adopted by current iPhones, and Biel and Lens are likely to be providing all the glass backs for the new iPhones next year.” – Nikkei
With the glass backs and stainless steel frame, the iPhone 8 may sport slightly thicker body than its immediate predecessor. A bit sturdy casing topped by curved edges would feel pretty comfortable in the palms, providing the essential grip.
iPhone 8 OLED Display
The edge-to-edge OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) display will significantly transform viewing experience on iPhone. It's a bit thinner and more energy efficient than LCD display that currently exists on iPhones.
OLED display provides much better image quality, better contrast, higher brightness, much faster refresh rates, fuller viewing angle and wider color range.
The bezel-free display is all geared up to set the tone for the all new design. The best thing about is that it would provide an awesome media viewing on Smartphone. Based on these rumors of iPhone 8 Features, we can predict that Apple is focusing more on quality to provide better user experience.
Fingerprint Scanner to be Embedded into the Display/Touch ID button will be Placed on Rear Side
With all-screen display being almost a certainty, the biggest question is where would be fingerprint scanner?
As per several iPhone 8 rumors and leaked images, the Touch ID could be embedded into the display. However, many recent reports have suggested that the Touch ID won't be embedded into the display due to some technical issues.
While some rumors have said that the fingerprint scanner would be placed on the rear side of iPhone 8, others have gone on to say that the iPhone 2017 won't come Touch ID at all.
“Apple has selected neither Synaptics' Natural ID touch fingerprint sensor nor Qualcomm's Sense ID fingerprint technology for its new OLED iPhones, and decided to use its own Authentec algorithm combined with Privaris glass identification technology to redesign a new fingerprint ID solution, according to industry sources.” – DigiTimes
Vertical Dual-camera on iPhone 8
Leaked images have shown that the next-gen iPhone will feature a vertical dual-camera on the back. The vertical camera design does look cool on the back panel.
The dual-camera system will continue to be exclusive to the 5.5-inch model. Rumors suggest that optical image stabilization (OIS) will be available for both wide-angle and telephoto lens.
More importantly, the vertical camera will be able to not just capture improved photos but also enable augmented reality based features.
Front-Facing Camera Embedded into the Display
The front-facing camera is said to be embedded into the display of iPhone 8. Apple is reportedly testing a dual-lens camera system for selfie camera. It is said to feature three modules with 3D sensing capabilities powered by PrimeSense technology. It will have an infrared transmitting module, an infrared receiving module, and a traditional camera.
Using infrared additions, the camera can easily find the location and depth of objects placed in front of it. This technology may also be used for facial and iris recognition or for future AR capabilities.
iPhone 8 Concept Images, Leaked Renders
OneLeaks have released some new iPhone 8 images. As the renders are based on leaked CAD images, they might provide the most accurate look of the next-gen iPhone.
The smartphone showcases nearly edge-to-edge OLED display and also sports stainless steel edges that look quite similar to that of iPhone 4. The rear side flaunts an all-glass design. The back panel also features the dual-camera design.
As per these renders, the iPhone 8 measures in at 143.5×70.9×7.7 mm. If it proves to be true, it will be thicker than iPhone 7 and 7 Plus that measures in at in at 7.1 mm and 7.3 mm respectively.
This iPhone 8 2017 render showcases the full rear shell. It features an aluminum body, vertical dual camera, a cutout below Apple logo which could possibly be for Touch ID.
These leaked iPhone 8 images are claimed to be the CNC dummy model from famous iPhone manufacturer Foxconn. The front and rear panel of the iPhone has been constructed with slightly curved 2.5D glass that's neatly held together by the stainless steel frame. The stainless steel sides look similar to those of iPhone 4. While the volume and mute buttons are on the left side, the power button is on the right. There is a vertical dual camera on the back.

As per these leaked renderings, the iPhone 8 measures 137.54mm tall by 67.54mm wide that is quite similar in size to the iPhone 7. It sports nearly edge-to-edge display. The render shows a 4mm bezel around the display. A narrow earpiece can be seen on the front of the device. Camera and sensors have been embedded in the display.
Recently, KK Sneak Leaks posted a purported image of a protective iPhone 8 case. It seems to be in line with various rumors. The image shows the vertical dual camera, cutouts for volume buttons. Interestingly, it shows a longer power button on the right side.
These purported images of iPhone 8 features seem to be perfectly in line with rumors. Boasting infinity display, vertical dual-camera, glass back, stainless steel frame, it looks really impressive.
Other Important iPhone 8 Rumors
Some rumors have suggested that Apple may introduce three models. While one iPhone 8 model will have OLED display, the two others will flaunt standard LCD display. The 5-inch model will join the illustrious party of 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models.
Some rumored have even suggested that the third iPhone 8 2017 will flaunt a 5.8-inch ultra-large display. The bigger than bigger iPhone would be an answer to Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus which has the huge 6.2-inch display.
Iris Scanning/Facial Scanning on iPhone 8
The 2017 iPhone could have iris or facial scanning technology. An iris scanner will allow you to unlock your iPhone or make payment with your eyes.
For those unfamiliar, the iris is the circular colored muscle of the eye that consists of a complex and random pattern which is unique to each individual.
Taiwan-based supplier Xintec which is an affiliate of Apple manufacturer TSMC, is reportedly manufacturing iris-recognition chips that will come with iPhone 8.
Facial scanning is also said to arrive on the next-gen iPhone. With the addition of these two biometric authentications, you will be able to authenticate with more convenience. More importantly, prying eyes won't be able to peep into your private data.
Long-Range Wireless Charging
A lot of Android smartphones flaunt wireless charging for quite some time. However, Apple is yet to bring it to iPhone. As per rumors, iPhone 8 will be featured with wireless charging solution in its best form.
“Apple is exploring cutting-edge technologies that would allow iPhones and iPads to be powered from further away than the charging mats used with current smartphones, the people said, asking not to be identified as the details are private. The iPhone maker is looking to overcome technical barriers including loss of power over distance with a decision on implementing the technology still being assessed.” – Bloomberg
Faster A11 processor
The A11 processor powers iPhone 8, and it is going to be a lot faster and efficient. It can also make the next-gen iPhone last long. Since A10 processor is almost 40% faster than its predecessor, an A11 processor could have the same lead over its predecessor.
Better 3D Touch on iPhone 8
3D is expected to be more elegant and functional. As per rumors, Apple may use a new 3D Touch module on iPhone 8 along with “additional graphite sheet lamination” in order to reduce heat.
iPhone 8 Battery
The upcoming iPhone may feature more powerful battery. It may come with a stacked logic board design will deliver longer battery life.
As per reports, L-shaped two-cell battery pack with a capacity around 2,700 mAh may come with the iPhone 2017. With more energy efficient OLED panel and A11 Chip, the battery life would be further improved.
iPhone 8 will come with more powerful Siri. Faced with huge competition from Google Assistant Amazon Echo, the virtual assistant is said to be more advanced. It will be smart enough to respond to contextual requests and dialogues.
“Apple acquired Australia-based machine learning startup Turi in August 2016, aiming to further strengthen the functionality, as well as the market share, of its Siri intelligent personal assistant. Meanwhile, market sources have also indicated that Apple's next-generation iPhone devices are likely to come with enhanced Siri.” – DigiTimes
iPhone 8 Storage and RAM
While some reports have suggested that only the 5.5-inch model will come with 3GB RAM, others have predicted that it will no longer be exclusive to only phablets.
256GB storage option arrived with iPhone 7 series. Based on some rumors, a new storage option on the higher end of the stream could be added.
Some reports have suggested that the next-gen iPhone would be available only in 64GB and 256GB storage.
iPhone 8 Release Date
Going by the trend, iPhone 8 would be introduced in September and be launched either by the end of the same month or in the beginning of October.
iPhone 8 concept videos
I really like these concept images and want iPhone 8 to be gorgeous as it's expected to be. If given a chance, I would make sure to install the Home button under touchscreen—and not on the rear side. Besides, I would love to have the curved edge which would make it a bit easier to hold the device comfortably.
So, what are your iPhone 8 features expectation? If you were given an opportunity to design the next-gen iPhone, what could be its form-factor? It would be great to know that.
