Upadate (11-June-2013): Apple announced iOS 7 at the WWDC 2013 this morning. iOS 7 will be released by fall, while the developer betas are now available. Check out all the iOS 7 features.

Apparently, traffic reports are pointing to a device tagged iPhone 6,1 (yeah, this is after the iPhone 5) and coming from a mobile operating system that calls itself iOS 7. Interestingly, the final piece of the puzzle confirms something very important: Apple is working on iOS 7, and testing it from the next iPhone device.

The tracked IP address points to Apple’s Cupertino office. Well, that kind of seals it right?

iOS 7 Features List

iOS 7 has been in the news for quite a long time now. When Apple released iOS 6, discussions about iOS 7 began right away. New features were added to the to-do after having seen the capabilities of iOS 6. Although Apple has only now seeded iOS 6.1 to developers, the work on iOS 7 appears to be going in earnest.

But what’s even more important is that the dev logs show a new device on the block. The identifier is “iPhone 6,1.” Readers should note that the iPhone 5 is identified with “iPhone 5,1” and “iPhone 5,2” which means Apple has probably got the first prototype of the next iPhone readied.

We’ve been talking about iOS 7 features over here at iGB and one of the first things that comes to mind is power widgets: like SBSettings or NCSettings. Several more features are on the list.

The iPhone 6 (or if it is an incremental update, the iPhone 5X with ‘x’ being anyone’s guess) is expected to be out by mid-2013. Several analysts have pointed to a June release judging by Apple’s sudden half-year upgrade of its iPad. However, there are a few skeptics too who think the iPhone 6/5S would be out only by October next year, in the usual yearly product launch cycle of iPhones.

All this talk about iPhone 6 release dates notwithstanding, if Apple has already begun wide-scale testing of the device prototype, a June release seems quite plausible. We’ll be looking forward to it.

As to iOS 7, it could be announced in March along with a product upgrade for iPad or iPad Mini.
