Walkie-Talkie app is finally here! It offers a fun way to send quick messages to your friends. Featuring a neat interface, it feels familiar right from the word go. Follow along this quick hands-on guide to use Walkie-Talkie app in watchOS 5 on Apple Watch.
Before getting started, ensure that your Apple Watch is fully on-board. This new voice-messaging app works via iPhone connection and Wi-Fi. However, if you have Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE, you won’t have any problem in using this app.

How to Add Your Friends to Walkie-Talkie List
To get going, you have to first send an invitation to your friends. Once they have accepted your request, you are ready to go on a long roll!
Step #1. Launch the Walkie-Talkie app on your Apple Watch.
Step #2. Now, you should see the list of all of your contacts. Select a contact to send a request. (Make sure to choose the friend who has Apple Watch running watchOS 5.)
Now, your friend will get a request saying you want to talk to him/her using Walkie-Talkie.
The receiver will have two options:
- Always Allow
- Dismiss the request
Step #3. After a contact has been added to your list of recipients, it will appear in the Watch app under the Walkie-Talkie section.
Going forward, you can start sending a message to your friend.
How to Send a Voice Message Using Walkie-Talkie App on Apple Watch
Sending a message using Walkie-Talkie app is pretty simple.
Step #1. Open Walkie-Talkie app on your smartwatch.
Step #2. Now, you need to tap on a contact card.
Step #3. Next, touch and hold the TALK button to record the speech.
Step #4. Once you are done, release the button.
That’s it! Your message will be sent.
When you receive a message, it will be played automatically. You have the option to adjust the volume using the Digital Crown. To do so, turn it up or down.
One more thing worth noting is that you can get into the Walkie-Talkie conversation via AirPods and connected Bluetooth headphones or speakers as well.
Besides, a shortcut to the Walkie-Talkie app shows up at the top of every watch face when it is being used. You can just tap on the app icon to return to it.
How to Switch to Unavailable Mode to Avoid Talking in Walkie-Talkie App
There are times when you might not want to communicate with anyone. In this case, you can switch to the unavailable mode to stop receiving messages.
Step #1. Open Walkie-Talkie app on your watch.
Step #2. Now, swipe all the way up to access Available toggle. Then, turn it on.
If anyone who tries to communicate with you will see something like “John is unavailable”. Besides, you will get the alert that someone tried to talk with you. The notification will itself offer you the option to get into action again.
How to Add/Delete a Contact in Walkie-Talkie
It’s easy to manage contacts in the messaging app. You can add or delete contacts without any hassle.
Step #1. Open Walkie-Talkie app on your Apple Watch.
Step #2. Now, tap on the plus button below the list of cards. And, then add the contacts you want to chat with.
To remove a contact, you need to swipe left on a contact card and then tap on a red “X” to delete it.
Note: You can also delete a contact via the Watch app. The process is just as simple.
That’s pretty much it!
From what I have experienced, the app is quite good for instant messaging. The intuitive interface and simplicity are its main qualities. If there were anything I would love to add to the app, it would be group conversation.
There is one more thing worth noting is that even if you have enabled Do Not Disturb mode or Theatre Mode, you will hear the message of your friend. I think it can annoy many people. Hopefully, Apple fixes it during the beta.
