How to use Transit Directions in Maps in iOS 9 on iPhone and iPad

Transit directions feature on iPhone/iPad running iOS 9 can guide you through the public transport of a city you are travelling in. This feature is limited to a select few cities though, it’s a great help for global travellers.

Public transit is the best way for any outsider to cruise the city he is travelling in. If you like to ditch the taxi or your own car and love to explore the locale by public transit, iOS 9 brings an excellent feature, transit directions for globe-trotters.

Before moving ahead, please note that transit directions feature is available for following cities only; Baltimore, Berlin, Chicago, London, Mexico City, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto, Washington, D.C and 300 cities in China.

How to use Transit Directions in Maps on iPhone and iPad

With this feature you can be your own guide in a place you never visited in your life. If you do not belong to any of the above cities, your iPhone will display a message: Transit information for “City” is not available. In this case, you can choose third-party transit apps to check public transit.

Step #1. Launch Maps app on your iDevice.

Step #2. Tap on “i” icon from the bottom right.

Step #3. Tap on Transit then Tap on Done from top right corner.

Step #4. Tap on an angular arrow on the top left corner.

A screen will appear on your device with the title of Directions. You can see two options: Start and End.

Step #5. Type in locations of leaving (from) and arriving (to) next to Start and End respectively → Now tap on Route.

Step #6. Tap on Transit; this app will show you route as if you are driving.

Step #7. Tap on Start.

The app will begin routing your trip. You can also see every step on a separate card; you can also check driving and walking directions. If you want to see next stations, you can tap on three horizontal lines at the bottom.

As a value addition, this feature assigns unique color to different segments of trip on Map. Users get to know when to change public transit with a single look.

The public transit feature on iOS 9 doesn’t support flyover; for better understanding of route, you can use Driving or Walking directions. This will show flyover to get a real preview of the route. Tap on (i) icon and select 3D map and Satellite.
