How to Use Find My Mac: Complete Guide for Newbies

“Find My Mac” can go a long way in not just providing an extra layer of safeguard to your data but also tracking the lost or stolen Mac. Moreover, you can remotely lock your device and even erase its entire content. Considering how crucial it’s to offer the needed protection to the device, we thought it would be apt to make a hands-on guide regarding how to use Find My Mac.

Often misplace your MacBook in the house? You’ll be able to quickly find it out by playing a loud sound on it. One thing worth noting is that you can locate the MacBook, only if it’s awake and connected to the Internet.

How to Enable “Find My Mac”

This feature needs to have access to the location of your Mac. So, ensure that you have enabled Location Services on your computer.

If you are yet to turn it on, open System Preferences → Security & Privacy → select Privacy tab → click on the lock icon then enter your user password. Next, click on Unlock and check the box for Enable Location Services.

Step #1. Launch System Preferences app on your Mac → iCloud.

Step #2. Now, check the box next to Find My Mac.

Note: If Location Services is disabled on your Mac, you should see “Details”. Click on it → click on “Open Security & Privacy” → now follow the same instructions mentioned above to enable it.

How to Locate Your Lost Mac

You can use the “Find My iPhone” app on your iOS device or head over to to track the lost computer using the web app.

On the Web

Step #1. Open a web browser on a computer and go to Then, sign in using your Apple ID and password.

Step #2. Now, click on Find iPhone icon.

Now, you should see your Mac on the Map and its exact location.

Note: If the location of your computer is not available, check the box next to “Notify me when found”. As soon as it finds the location of your computer, you will be informed.

Play Sound On Your Misplaced Mac

If you think that your Mac may be hidden somewhere in the room, you can play a sound on the computer to quickly find it out.

Step #1. Follow the steps 1 to 3 as mentioned above.

Step #2. Now, click on Play Sound.

Lock Your Mac

You can choose to lock your computer to prevent anyone from using it. Do note that, you won’t be able to erase its content if it’s locked.

Step #1. Follow the first 3 steps as mentioned above.

Step #2. Now, click on Lock.

Click on Lock in Find My Mac in iCloud WebStep #3. Click on Lock again → enter a four-digit passcode and confirm. Then, click on Lock.

You can type in a message (optional) that will be displayed on your locked Mac. For example, please contact me as soon as possible. Mob: (xxx) xxx – xxx. Then click on Lock.

Important: make sure to note down the passcode so that you don’t forget it.

Note: Once you have found your macOS device, enter the lock passcode to unlock it. You can also unlock it from another computer by going to → Find iPhone → All Devices → select your lost Mac → Unlock. Then, verify your identity and enter the passcode to unlock it.

Erase the Entire Data of Your Mac

If you are planning to sell your computer or don’t want to use it anymore, you can choose to erase it. Keep in mind; it removes all the content and settings. However, the process may take up to a day to finish.

Step #1. Follow the steps 1 to 3 as mentioned above.

Step #2. Now, click on Erase Mac and confirm.

Using Find My iPhone App to Locate Mac

Note: Make sure the app has access to your location. Settings → Privacy → Location Services and turn on the switch. Then, tap on Find My iPhone and select While Using the App.

Step #1. On your iOS device, open Find My iPhone and sign in using your Apple ID and password.

Step #2. Next, you should see all of your devices. Tap on the Mac you want to locate. It would be appeared on the Map with the exact location.
