How to Capture Portrait Selfie on iPhone X

Step #1. Launch Camera app on your iPhone.

Step #2. Now, you need to swipe to access Portrait button and tap on it.

Step #3. Next, tap on camera Swap button to switch to the front-facing camera.

Step #4. Next up, you have to select Portrait Lighting effect:

There are five options:

Portrait Lighting feature to apply four impressive studio-quality lighting effects to your Portrait mode images.

  • Natural Light: It simply blurs the background for high contrast.
  • Studio Light: It lets you brighten up facial features.
  • Contour Light: It offers dramatic directional lighting.
  • Stage Light: It lets you completely separate your subject in the spotlight.
  • Stage Mono: It allows you to isolate your subject in the spotlight in classic black and white.

Select your preferred lighting effect.

Step #5. Now, follow Camera app's prompts.

For instance, it will say “More light required,” “Place subject within 8 feet,” “Move farther away” etc.

After you have properly followed the instructions, the banner at the bottom will turn yellow.

Note: You will be able to shoot in Portrait mode even if the banner doesn't turn yellow. However, the photo will not have lighting effects.

Step #6. Finally, hit the shutter button to take your photo.

You have the option to choose from any of the five lighting effects during editing.

Step #1. Launch Photos app on your iPhone.

Step #2. Now, tap on Portrait mode photo you wish to edit.

Step #3. Next, tap on Edit.

Step #4. Next up, you need to tap on the cube in the bottom center of the screen to access the lighting menu.

Step #5. Up next, you have to swipe on the cubes to choose an alternate lighting option → Finally, tap on Done to confirm the change.

How to Remove the Portrait Mode Effect on iPhone X

If you have captured photos in Portrait mode but later don't want the depth effect, you can remove the lighting effect.

Step #1. Launch Photos app on your iPhone and select the selfie you want to change.

Step #2. Now, tap on Edit.

Step #3. Next, tap Portrait at the top of your screen. Then tap on Done.

If you ever want to re-add the Portrait mode effect, simply Edit and tap Portrait again.

How to Revert Portrait Photos to Original on iPhone X

There is also an option to revert portrait photos to the original. When you do it, all the edits will be removed, and this action can't be undone.

Step #1. Launch Photos app on your iPhone and select the selfie.

Step #2. Now, tap on Edit.

Step #3. Tap on Revert at the bottom right corner. And then tap on Revert to Original to confirm.
