How to Install watchOS 2 Beta on Your Apple Watch

Although Apple Watch is still quite newbie having been launched barely a couple of months before, Apple has unveiled watchOS 2 at WWDC 2015. The upcoming watchOS has packed in plenty of defining features such as Activation Lock. Moreover, the watch will have its own native apps which will run a lot fast faster and smoothly.

Apple has already released the beta version of watchOS 2 for developers. The full-fledged form of watchOS will arrive this fall. If you are a developer, you can install watchOS 2 beta 1 on the Watch in order to test its functionality.

How to Download & Install watchOS 2 Beta on Apple Watch

First off all, Unpair Your Apple Watch with iPhone or reset your watch to the factory settings. (To reset your Apple Watch to factory settings, go to Settings app on your watch → tap on General → tap on Reset → tap on Erase All Content and Settings → enter passcode then tap on Continue to confirm.)

Download & Install iOS 9 Public Beta on your iPhone from developer portal using developer account.

Register your iPhone

Step #1. Go to Apple Developer portal and then Download and install the iOS 9 SDK (Xcode 7 beta).

Step #2. Next up, you have to connect your iPhone to Mac and launch the Xcode 7 beta.

Step #3. Click on Window and go to Organizer.

Step #4. Up next, you need to copy the UDID (Unique Device Identifier) from the identifier field. The UDID is of 40 characters.

Step #5. Now, sign in to Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles with the use of your developer-registered Apple ID. And then, click on the “+” icon to start the process of registration.

Step #6. Name your device and then paste the UDID which you copied above. Then, click on Continue to confirm the process.

Install watchOS 2 beta on Apple Watch

Note: Make sure your Apple Watch is charged about 50-60%. Keep the watch connected to inductive charger during the entire installation process.

Step #1. Pair your Apple Watch with iPhone. You must ensure that iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and placed near the watch.

Step #2. Next up, you have to download the watchOS 2 beta configuration on your iPhone from Apple Developer site.

Step #3. Up next, launch the Profile and then tap on Apple Watch as the location to install the watchOS beta. Reboot your device when you are asked.

Step #4. Open Apple Watch app → go to General → tap on Software Update. You may have to enter your passcode.

The update process will begin. After the update has been successfully completed, your watch will reboot.

  1. While this is technically correct there are lots of unnecessary steps here. All you really need is iOS 9 (of some flavor) on your phone and the above linked watch profile. No need to unpair or factory reset the watch. Here are the steps I took:

    Install profile
    Restart watch (prompted after profile install)
    Get update (via Software Update in watch app)

  2. Thanks, but this doesn’t mention that you need to be a PAID DEVELOPER in order to download the WatchOS profile. iPhone has a public beta, but Apple Watch doesn’t.
