Having tested the latest tvOS for about a month, I can say with a ditto that Apple TV has finally got the killer-punch to the charm. If you have a developer account and are looking to put your hands on tvOS 10, you can easily install it on your compatible TV (4th generation). Here is how you can get started!
You Need to Know:
- There are two ways you can install tvOS on your Apple TV.
- Currently, it’s a bit complicated to install tvOS as it requires some lengthy steps to be taken.
- You will need to connect your TV to Mac with USB-C cable to download tvOS configuration profile.
- Over the air process only updates the system software. The configurations, as well as apps, remain on your device.
- Using the Restore Image option, which connects to your Mac via USB-C, will get rid of your Apple TV developer unit.
- As tvOS 10 is still in developer beta, you may have some bugs while using it.
How to Download and Install tvOS 10 Beta OTA (Over-the-Air)
Step #1. Visit developer.apple.com/download on your Mac and then enter your developer username and password to log in.
Step #2. Next, you need to click on the blue Download button to the right of tvOS 10 beta configuration profile.
Step #3. Now, install the Apple Configurator app from the Mac App Store.
Step #4. Next up, you have to connect your Apple TV (4th gen) to AC power. At the same time, connect your TV to your Mac using a USB-C cable.
Step #5. Open Apple Configurator on your Mac and click on Add Profiles to your Apple TV.
Step #6. Now, you will have to add the tvOS 10 beta configuration profile which you have just downloaded. Alternately, you can drag and drop the file to the Apple TV icon.
Step #7. After the configuration profile has been installed, reboot your Apple TV. On your Apple TV, you need to click on Settings followed by System.
Step #8. Finally, click on Software Update.
Once your TV detects tvOS 10, it will download and install it.
How to Install the tvOS 10 Beta Using USB-C
Step #1. On your Mac, head over to apple.com/download. Then you have to enter your developer username and password to log in.
Step #2. Next up, you will have to click on the blue Download button which is to the right of tvOS 10 restore image.
Step #3. Now, you have to click on the blue Download button which is to the right of Xcode 8 and then install Xcode 8 on your Mac.
Step #4. Now, you need to connect your Apple TV (4th gen) to AC power. At the same, make sure to connect your TV to your Mac using a USB-C.
Step #5. Up next, launch iTunes and select your Apple TVwhen you see it in iTunes.
Step #6. Now, you have to hold down the Option key and click on Check for Updates.
Step #7. Next, click on the tvOS 10 beta you have just downloaded.
