How to Turn on Auto-Downloads in Podcasts App on iPhone/iPad: iOS 7 Updated

Auto-download is an important feature for power users of the Podcasts app. If you are regular user of Apple’s Podcasts app and are looking for ways to switch ON the auto-download feature, here’s a nice short tutorial that’ll help you.

There are two ways to do this. If you want to enable Auto downloads for all the podcast episodes from all the subscriptions, you have to do it via Settings. If not, you’ll have to enable Auto downloads for the particular subscription from within the Podcasts app. Here’s how we do that.

How to Enable or Disable Podcasts Auto-Download in Podcasts App:

1). Auto Download for All Subscribed Podcast channels

  • Go to Settings
  • Scroll down and tap on Podcasts
  • Tap on Auto-downloads
  • Select ALL (if you want to download all podcasts (old ones too)).
  • If not, select Most Recent. Whatever new episode comes up on the channel will be automatically downloaded over Wifi.

How to Enable Auto Download in Podcasts App on iPhone or iPad
As you can see, this is great if you’ve got a few channels that you listen to. However, in case you’ve got podcasts channels where you listen to the episodes rarely / infrequently, it doesn’t make sense to auto-download the episodes (which eats up a lot of space).

2). A better solution will be to enable Auto-downloads only for those podcast subscriptions that you listen frequently/regularly. To do this:

  • Open the Podcasts app
  • Tap on My Podcasts (from the bottom menu)
  • Tap on the subscription / channel you want to enable Auto-Downloads for
  • Tap on Settings
  • Scroll down and tap on Auto-Downloads
  • Choose ‘All‘ or ‘Most Recent‘ according to your preference.

Auto-Downloads is an essential feature for quite a lot of podcast listeners. Obviously, you can’t keep downloading every new episode that comes up but having said that, if you’re running out of space, you might have to turn out this option.

How to delete downloaded episodes from Podcasts App:

Auto-downloaded episodes can be removed from the app by tapping on the blue icon from right side, scroll down and tap on Remove Download.Remove Download Episodes from Podcasts App
You can also delete multiple episodes at once by tapping on ‘Edit‘ under the podcasts channel and marking the episodes and deleting them.
