In a bid to reduce Apple’s dependence on China, iPhone assembler Foxconn is planning to shift to India for iPhone assembly. Foxconn is a Taiwan based company that manufactures most of Apple’s iPhones in China.
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, “Foxconn Technology Group, is considering producing the devices in India.”
Foxconn Mulls Shifting iPhone Assembly to India
In the last couple of months, the Sino-US trade war has severely affected the business in the United States. To avoid any production delay and loss, Foxconn might have taken this decision to move its base.
Foxconn is a contract manufacturer that assembles a large portion of the world’s iPhones in China. Executives at Foxconn are working out possibilities to include an India project in budget plans.
It is most likely that Chairman Terry Gou and other senior executives may visit India next month’s Lunar New Year to discuss plans, said people close to the matter.
Notably, the trade war between the two nations has forced many US companies to change their manufacturing locations from the dragon land.
China’s stricter policies have opened doors of opportunities for India as the latter is attracting global tech companies to establish their manufacturing base and sell their products to the emerging market of 1.3 billion consumers.
At this juncture, one must not forget that Tim Cook once said that India is the next China for Apple. As per a research report released by eMarketr, only about a quarter of Indian consumers have smartphones.
This doesn’t mean selling iPhones will be a cake walk for Apple. Till date, Apple had to face many challenges to secure the Indian market as the brand had just lost the market from 2% to 1% in 2017.
Indian consumers are not willing to buy expensive iPhones, and for this reason, Apple has so far manufactured mostly lower-end phones in India.
In 2017, Wistron Corp., another Taiwanese contract manufacturer, started assembling the SE model in the southern state of Karnataka.
Following iPhone SE models, Wistron has also begun assembling 6s models in the same state.
Foxconn’s arrival in India will create a win-win situation for Apple and Indian consumers. For Apple, India will serve a vast consumer base for company’s services, apart from iPhones. Foxconn is planning to manufacture higher-end iPhones with OLED displays.
