Untethered iOS 7 jailbreak was released by the evad3rs team this Sunday in a move that caught everyone by surprise. Even Saurik (Cydia) was caught unawares. Speculations as to why the sudden release are rife but let’s focus on what Evasi0n7 does.

Evasi0n7, the untethered iOS 7 jailbreak is compatible with iOS 7 through 7.0.4 which means it’s compatible with all public iOS 7 versions as of today. Apple is expected to release iOS 7.1 in a few days/weeks and might patch the exploit used by evad3rs.

Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 7-7.0.4 Released

Like last time, Evasi0n7 comes as an executable file. All instructions are very simple: all you do is download the software and run it while having your iDevice connected to the computer. Here are the download links:

Here’s how to untethered jailbreak your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch running iOS 7

Any iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch capable of running iOS 7 – 7.0.4 can be jailbroken with Evasi0n7. That means:

  • iPhone 5s/5/4s/4
  • iPod Touch 5G
  • iPad Air/4/3
  • iPad mini w/Retina and iPad mini (original)

Before you decide to jailbreak your iDevice, here are some things you should look out for:

  • Backup your iDevice completely via iTunes. This should take very little time and it will save you a lot of time if the jailbreak process doesn’t go as expected.
  • Avoid OTA updates. If you updated to iOS 7 or 7.0.4 via an Over-the-Air update, evad3rs team says that this might cause issues during jailbreak. In order to avoid this, update/upgrade to iOS 7.0.4 via iTunes. In case you already have iOS 7.0.4 installed, backup your device in iTunes and do a fresh restore. Then restore from backup.
  • If you’ve got a passcode lock enabled, disable it.

This has baffled a lot of people and there are no concrete answers but there are a lot of speculations. A few days back we had rumors about exploits being stolen – but that rumor was played down by the team. We were expecting that the untethered iOS 7 jailbreak will be released sometime in January 2014 after Apple released iOS 7.1.

iDB also mentioned that their “source” hinted about @geohot’s possible work on iOS 7 jailbreak. He was supposedly going to release an untethered iOS 7 JB too which pushed the envelop on evad3rs who decided to release the Evasi0n7 untethered jailbreak as a Christmas present.

The first release of Evasi0n7 apparently came with TaiG instead of Cydia. TaiG, for those of you who are not familiar with it yet, is a Chinese-based app store just like Cydia is. It contains a lot of apps/tweaks/packages that can be installed on your jailbroken iDevice. Incidentally, the store is linked with a lot of piracy which is against the law.

For the moment, evad3rs have decided to cut off TaiG due to a lot of piracy complaints. You get Cydia packaged with Evasi0n7 now.

There aren’t very many tweaks compatible with iOS 7 yet but even within the ones that are said to be compatible, issues are bound to crop up. The best thing you can do is avoid installing tweaks till Saurik works on Cydia and mobilesubstrate and that is adopted by evad3rs. @pod2g made it very clear in one of his tweets.
