There’s Dropbox for cloud storage and there are, at last count, some hundred different apps for opening different types of files. What if you could club these two into one and have one single app that lets you store all your files as well as open them within the same app?
, a German startup that was founded way back in 2011, hit our radar today. As it is, I think the app is amazing for its powerful features and simplicity. It’s one app that does two things: lets you open almost all types of common files (images, documents, media etc.) and also a cloud storage solution that beats most others.
Doctape for the iPhone and iPad is a simple-to-use app. At its best, Doctape supports a ton of filetypes.
- Microsoft Office files (Word doc/docx, Excel xls/xlsx, Powerpoint ppt/pptm/pptx)
- Open Office (odt, ods, sxw, stw)
- Text-files (rtf, txt, csv)
- Video files (mp4, mkv, mov, avi, ogv, divx , wmv, asf, m4v, webm, mpg, 3gp, 3gs)
- Audio files (mp3, m4a, ogg, aif, flac, ape, aac, wav, wma)
- Image & vector files (jpg, png, tif, bmp, ai, nef, arf)
- Adobe Photoshop files (.psd)
- Adobe PDF files (.pdf)
- Zip archive files (.zip)
The benefit of having one app handle almost all files seamlessly is a boon especially for iPad users who have to deal with a ton of files every day. While Dropbox has been a good solution to store and access files across devices, the only thing it could handle was documents and images with limited support, of course.
I think Doctape changes all that. Not only does it let you handle a ton of file types but it does it gracefully and seamlessly so you won’t find issues while accessing files within Doctape.
Some reviews glorify Doctape’s interface but I think it’s simple and meets the need while not hitting the uber-cool mark. But given the usage patterns, you’ll love the interface that comes with Doctape both on its iOS app as well as the web.
Setting up and using Doctape is quite easy as we found out. Signing up, uploading files, managing them, email uploads – these are some of the things the engineers behind Doctape have made as easy and simple as it can get.
You get a free 5GB storage with your Doctape account. I didn’t see a Premium Account upgrade option (although the website says it’s coming soon).
For a free solution, Doctape does deliver quite a ton of things. Don’t forget to try it out on your iPhone/iPad.
