Apple Rules Online and Offline Sales Channels

In an unlikely situation, Apple has shown higher sales in the second quarter of 2018. Users normally avoid buying iPhones ahead of Apple’s event when the company is going to announce new devices.

In a reverse trend, Apple’s iPhones have shown better sales in the second quarter of 2018. Since now, it has been noticed that Apple would see lower sales of iPhones in the Q2 as new iPhones arrive in September.

Users normally like to buy the latest iPhone, and therefore, they prefer to wait for the new arrivals.

iPhones Are Most Popular Models Across Online and Offline Channels

As per the research conducted by Counterpoint Smartphone Channel Share Tracker service, “the share of online smartphone channels grew to 13% of total US smartphone sales in Q2 2018 compared to 12% in Q1 2018”.

Counterpoint’s report is more focused on the performance of online sales channel, therefore, there is no detail about brand comparisons; the report was more inclined towards retailer websites.

Consumers have shown more trust in Amazon, leaving behind brand’s own site and other websites like Verizon and BestBuy. While Amazon hit the top rank with 23% of the market, Verizon and BestBuy were found at 12% and 9% respectively, leaving Apple at fourth place with 8% of online smartphone sales.

The data clearly indicates that consumers have purchased more premium smartphones online rather than offline.

Research Director Peter Richardson commented, “Online sales in the mid-tier and upper mid-tier price band segments have higher shares compared to offline sales [while] offline sales tend to do better at the low end […] However, online sales in [the premium] segment are mainly driven by Apple’s online store and to a lesser extent Samsung’s.”

Interestingly, worldwide sales of iPhones don’t paint a rosy picture. As noted by TechCrunch, “Huawei overtakes Apple in the global smartphone rankings for the second quarter this year. The latest figures from Gartner put Huawei ahead on sales to end users in Q2.”

Ahead of the launch of three smartphones this year, Apple gives good news to its users and competition. Notably, Apple is planning to roll out three iPhone models, and the company has high hopes for 6.1-inch LCD model.
