Apple continues to hold its tradition of not releasing products as promised. However, for 5G iPhone, the company didn’t give any word to its users. For the other two devices – AirPower and HomePod – Apple missed the deadline. As of now, Apple has no plans to roll out 5G iPhones, at least not until 2020.
Apparently, Apple may not have to suffer any damage, but this delay means a lot to its rivals, mainly Samsung Electronics. Apple’s arch-rival, Samsung always looks for reasons to beat (or bite) Apple.
Apple Not Willing to Release 5G iPhones Until 2020
Apple’s decision to launch 5G iPhone late is going to benefit Samsung, which will get a chance to win early customers. Notably, Samsung is planning to release its 5G phones in 2019.
Like 3G and 4G iPhones, Apple wants to play safe with 5G networks. People close to Apple revealed that the company would like to wait for a year after the initial deployment of 5G networks before Apple’s leading products get the power to access them.
Apple believes that new networks and first versions of rival smartphones will come with problems like uneven coverage. This makes consumers apprehensive of adopting the latest technology. However, signal boosters of 5G networks paint a rosy picture as this will be a more significant speed upgrade. They are of the opinion that Apple is running a risk by not adopting 5G networks quickly.
Industry experts believe Apple might have taken this decision to sit on the fence as the company doesn’t enjoy healthy relations with Qualcomm Inc., which is a global leader in 5G-enabled chips.
Industry insiders think that the shift from 4G to 5G will be a giant leap and for device manufacturers, this will be a significant selling point. Samsung plans to launch 5G-enabled devices next year; along with Samsung, Oppo and Huawei are also likely to launch 5G devices in 2019.
If words from Mark Hung, an analyst at Gartner Inc. are to be believed, “Apple has always been a laggard in cellular technology. They weren’t impacted in the past, but 5G is going to be much easier to market. But if they wait beyond 2020, then I think they’ll be impacted”.
Apple must not forget that its latest iPhones are not doing good in the market. Moreover, mobile carriers like Verizon and AT&T will surely promote smartphones with 5G networks to invite customers from other mobile services.
