According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, Apple has won a patent for the foldable screen, which could be used on iPhones and other Apple devices.
As per the patent granted by the office, Apple’s future electronic devices may have display and cover that are flexible or bendable.
Apple’s Foldable Display Patent Does Not Guarantee a Future Foldable iPhone
One must keep in mind that it is just a patent registered by Apple and granted by the department; it is not necessary Apple comes up with a foldable iPhone or iPad in the future.
Tech companies patent their ideas so that others cannot take undue advantage of their intellectual properties.
Apple filed this patent application in January 2018; this application was among many other patent applications the company filed about foldable display concept.
Interestingly, this patent sanction was first reported by Patently Apple on May 28.
Speaking to the CNN Business, Daniel Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, said,
“Foldable phones and 5G represent the next generation of smartphones in the coming years.”
Ives also added,
“Apple has been on the fence about foldable phones for years with rumors about the form factor circulating since about 2017.”
Apple’s run for foldable phones began with its patents for a flexible display filed in 2017. This display boasts touch sensors and portions that open and close like a book. This patent also covers a flexible iPhone that can fold in half and grip a user’s clothes.
Notably, smartphone makers Samsung and Huawei also launched their foldable phones at Mobile World Congress in February. However, selling the devices in consumer markets is still a challenge for the two giants.
Ives believes that new patent “shows this is something on its roadmap” of Apple.
Earlier, DigiTimes reported that Apple is expected to launch foldable iPhones to give an appropriate response to its rivals Samsung and Huawei. Maybe the industry observers had some information about Apple’s patent on foldable cover and display.
