3D Touch was introduced as one of the most appealing features of iPhone 6s/6s Plus in 2015. Designed to provide quick access to commonly used actions, it’s very useful. A few days back, I bumped into a hidden 3D Touch shortcut in Phone app on my iPhone 7. Though it’s easy to access this shortcut, many of you may not find it too straightforward to discover.

It’s a lot easy to access various communication options like FaceTime when calling to the phone number added to your Contacts. But what if you are trying to call someone whose phone number is not saved in your contact? Wouldn’t you want to have quick access to the option to call that person via FaceTime Video/Audio? Yes, you would. That’s when this hidden 3D Touch shortcut would come handy!

How to Access Hidden 3D Touch Shortcut in Phone App on iPhone

Note: Currently, only iPhone 6s/6s Plus and iPhone 7/7 Plus supports 3D Touch. Make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version.

Step #1. Open Phone app on your compatible iPhone.

Step #2. Now, tap on the Keypad tab at the bottom.

Step #3. Next, you need to enter the phone number.

Step #4. Once you have entered the phone number, simply 3D Touch the call button.

Step #5. Next up, you will see a shortcut menu with three options:

  • FaceTime Video
  • FaceTime Audio

You can choose any of the three options.

What about the phone numbers you have added to your Contacts?

Well, you can quickly access additional communication options from the phone numbers you have added to your contacts. It works even on the device that’s not compatible with 3D Touch.

To do so, open the Contacts app (alternatively, open Phone app and then tap on Contacts tab.), select the contact in question. Now, touch and hold on the video button to access other communication options like WhatsApp, FaceTime.

Likewise, touch and hold on call button to access the options to make a call via WhatsApp or FaceTime. Touch and hold on the message button to access the option to send a message via Messages app and WhatsApp.
